The Road to Uncertainty

I walked for miles on a long straight narrow road. The sun shone brightly without blazing heat. I was comfortable. Tall green trees surrounded me. I had the freedom to walk and let my mind wander. It was the perfect day. I walked for miles until my thoughts dried up and my feet got tired. There was nothing new to see and nowhere to rest. There must be more to this walk, I thought.

I noticed a shadow crossing my path. Startled, I looked up to see a fluffy white cloud in the sky above me. Where did it come from? I walked further and saw a curve in the road. My curiosity was peaked. What could be around the corner?

Up ahead the sky darkened. I felt a shiver of fear, or was it cold? I wasn’t sure. With no time to think, I ducked under a tree branch I hadn’t even noticed as huge drops of rain hit the pavement with big splotchy patches. As fear dripped away with the rain, I stepped out on the sidewalk and I was soon drenched.

Wet and frustrated, I kept walking and soon came to a stream of water covering my path. How did my fine day turn into such a wet mess? I have no way to cross this swift-flowing water blocking my way. Feeling anxious I looked around for my familiar path. All I saw ahead was a stream of water until two baby deer came into my vision. I was mesmerized as I saw the mother deer approach and nudge her distracted little one to drink more.

I felt warm inside as I wondered where they had come from. Maybe there was a way across that even a human could pass. Walking past the trees, I saw a little bridge. It looked shaky. Could I cross? I took a step onto the bridge. It seemed sturdy enough. When I got to the other side I didn’t see my straight smooth path. Instead, there were big rocks and even a boulder in my path.

Now I was mad. This was so much work, and sometimes scary. Why can’t I find the path I know?

I heard a sound in the distance and looked up to see a colorful rainbow arching across the sky. I stood in awe watching a bird flapping its wings as it careened over the rainbow. A smile filled my face as I took in the beauty of my new path. I would find a way around the boulder and over the rocks to see my next adventure around the corner.
