Writing Prompt: Crazy Car Rides

Riding in a cab through the narrow busy streets of London had me on edge. Would we hit the older woman crossing the street with a walker? Whew! She made it to the other side. I hang on to my seat as we careen around a corner and miss the car on our left, or was it our right? What side are we on? Getting into the cab without getting hit by an electric scooter was hazardous enough, but tucked into the backseat holding our big suitcases with our feet so they wouldn’t attack, kept us alert, but we made it.

I said my prayers on the 2-hour ride from the Cotswolds to London in a minivan. The rain was coming down in sheets, and I was sure the driver couldn’t see through the windshield. Although I was tired and sleepy after nine hours of sightseeing, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the road. At the end of the trip, our tour guide thanked the driver for getting us safely through the unprecedented rainstorm to the bus stop. Standing in the pouring rain, we were able to call a cab to get us to our Airbnb. After our crazy car ride, I put my wet jacket in the washer/dryer combo only to have it steamed, then relaxed with the best sushi I have ever eaten. A day to remember.

  1. I had a somewhat similar experience in Barcelona when I rode on the back of a moped through crazy traffic to get to a football (soccer) match. I'm still pinching myself we made it alive!
