Writing Prompt: It’s a long climb…

Writing a Book is a Long Climb

Writing a story with its different scenes, adventures, fears, and conflicts can feel exciting, emotional, and sometimes exhausting. It can feel like a rollercoaster ride to write. Organizing, editing, editing, and creating a cohesive manuscript can feel like a long climb.

On the long climb toward publishing my novel, I gather my tools. I have my journal and phone notes that I have randomly jotted down my thoughts and ideas. I have my computer document that I write scenes and put them together. I have a loose outline, characters I am developing, and names I am changing. I have been working on the long climb of creating a novel for years. All of my documents and notes are starting to feel overwhelming. Will I ever be able to put it all  together into an interesting story that makes sense? How long will it take?

When I get to the top of the mountain, what will I have? Will I have a book? If I get to the top of the mountain holding a published book in my hand, how will I feel? I can imagine looking out over the countryside and imagining all of the people who will want to read my book. I just need to get it to them.

Will I sprinkle magic fairy dust over the town to get them excited about buying my book? Hmm. It might make more sense to use my powers of persuasion to broadcast to all the people below me that I just wrote my first novel, and they just have to read it. Actually, I think it would be easiest to use my psychic powers to instill in everyone the desire to buy my book for $16.00.

It’s a long climb, but I will make it up the mountain. It will be worth the brain drain, late nights, and exhaustion to make it to the top of the mountain holding my book, with the handsome husky dog Grey on the cover. I will feel a warm sensation of appreciation and accomplishment when I see all of the comments about my book from my readers.

  1. Hi Nancy,
I am fortunate that I don't find writing a challenge. Quite the opposite in fact. I so enjoy it that the thought of it being long climb does not occur. The many novels I have written have all been developed in the same way. I have an idea. Then I just let it flow and the characters do the rest. Other than jotting down times lines to ensure continuity I make no notes. I have one published book but I find publishers a nightmare to work with. Their timescales are extraordinary. So, for my current project I have formed a publishing company to handle my work and will shortly be publishing four novels with an other two nearing completion.. I'm just waiting for cover designs to be complete then away I go.
